2013 SHE Is An Icon Award Nominee – Yadiyda Oppong

Yadiyda Oppong

Yadiyda was born in London, England with African Ghanain decent as Sandra Oppong.  She always wanted to be a fashion designer and recieved her first sewing machine at the age of 5.  Her mother was a musician so Yadiyda started her early career as a child making stage clothes.  She soon went to Hounslo College to study clothing construction followed by the London College of Fashion. Of 3000 applicants she was one of 30 that were selected for this program.  She recieved a degree in fashion design, embroidery and art.  Once she completed her degree, she formed a clothing line called YDA.  Yadiyda visited America in 1997 and decided to move YDA to the states and opened a clothing store.  At a Jadakiss Video shoot, she met Molly Jones and partnered with her to create Ventige Soul, which evoled to what we know now as Yadiyda Clothing.  She is a mother of 4 and a fulltime business owner and has gained Icon status in the industry of fashion.

Where passions meet visions and color becomes life. Decorum dresses the art of fashion and fashion decorates the canvas, yadiyda designs this masterpiece—your blueprint… speaking to your senses…your spirit, seeing past the outer being into something more poised for creation. Her cloths accentuate the total self, the inner flame that is thirsting for adventure, for movement—for fashion.

Yadiyda’s quench for avant-garde has resulted in euphoric elements that shape the contours of the body—any body. What you see is beyond what Yadiyda creates for your figure, she embodies your soul. Cloths that fit, that function, that funk. Yadiyda’s garments incorporate various fabrics from cotton to metal and bare every shade of the rainbow because as Yadiyda says, “all colors match, all of them, its just that no one believes that.” But color is only one component with Yadiyda, being sexy and comfortable is a… must as well, “too many women have misconstrued conceptions of themselves, they think comfortable isn’t sexy, mismatched isn’t sexy, but I say it is, I know it is. It’s how I live and how I design my cloths.”

Yadiyda complements the luscious curves of the body, the way the garments are designed and then sewn, match every aspect of the silhouette. yadiyda adds that to your canvas. After all, style and design are about how the look makes you feel, your signature story to the world. yadiyda’s signature is for the contradictory, everyday, occupied woman, who has no time for boundaries

SHE LOVES – Essential Essence Body Oils

Melody Armstrong with Essential Essence

For those of you that know me well, you know how faithful I am to the products and people that I love.  Recently we had the opportunity to add a new product to our shelves at the HOBI showroom.  Melody Armstrong has created quality natural body products through her body and skin care line, Essential Essence.  Her body oils are a perfect fusion of scents and organic moisturizing oils with the added benefits of enhancing the well-being of anyone that uses these products because of the healing properties of the ingredients used.  Her products are infused with aromatherapies and made with TLC to carry out her mission to provide a “Natural Pathway to Health, Beauty & Relaxation”.  My favorite scent is “Love”, which can be found on the Essential Essence site or at the HOBI showroom.  Every bottle is a little piece of heaven.  This is definitely a product that SHE LOVES and will be using as long as I can get my hands on a bottle of “Love”.

Where has SHE Been???

A number of months have passed since my last post and our “Love Yourself First” Campaign.  If you are wondering where SHE has been …. I hope these pictures tell the story of where SHE has been, what SHE has done and the fabulous people that SHE has met along the way.

Here goes…..

Encouragement By Molly Jones

I woke up this morning and was very grateful.  I remember the feeling of rushing out the door to a job I hated.  Wearing clothing that I hated. Getting written up for being late or talking on the phone. Trying to pursue my dreams on my days off or at night when I was burnt out from being in an environment that drained me.  This morning I woke up and was very grateful that I don’t have to do that anymore.  It has been a long road.  We still have a long way to go.  But I want to encourage everyone who is grinding and still has to do a 9 to 5.  Don’t ever give up on your dreams.  They are important.  With out them we are walking zombies. Dreams and goals make our world go round they keep us hopeful and alive.  When your lose site of your dream, remind yourself.  Take a deep breath.  Its coming.  DON’T EVER GIVE UP!!!

Shift The Energy by Molly Jones

Energy is powerful.  Energy is what surrounds us. We give it away. Sometimes we take it.  Think of the people that inspire you the most, make you feel good,  create smiles on your face even when they are not there.  Often times we keep these people at a distance.  Maybe it is fear.  I am not sure why.  Why do we often push people away that make us feel good and keep the toxic people around us?  I have been thinking a lot about this lately.  Reflecting on when I feel the best, and who is around.  Good Energy.  Sunshine feeling.  Singing out loud.  Dancing for no reason.  Today I choose to keep those people close.  And honor them.  Think about when you feel the best.  Who is around. Have you told them? TELL THEM!!! Do it!!!!!

SHIFT THE ENERGY!!!

To Be Desired……

Love, Balance, Prosperity, Wellness…..The list goes on and on for SHE.  SHE desires the kind of love that is unconditional, deep, connecting and lasting.  It’s the kind of love that allows me to “love myself first” and supports me in creating the life that I am meant to have.  SHE longs for balance; to wake up every morning excited about what the day may offer and not consistently burdened by the complexities of life.  SHE wants to have a rich life that allows her to experience and to LIVE.  SHE desires to cater to her body, her temple in every way imaginable; treating it like the sacred space that it is.   To be desired…..

What are the desires of your heart?  What is it that you long to have?  An even greater question is what is getting in the way of you having it all…..the life that you DESIRE and everything that comes with it?  Last month was about loving yourself first.  It was an opportunity to connect, embrace and embody who you are.  This month is about your personal desires.  Take this journey with SHE and declare what you want.  Step out on faith, be unique; who you are and do something different to manifest your truth.

Just BE …..

SHE has quickly learned that sometimes loving yourself first can be uncomfortable.  We are all unique and perfectly “imperfect” with qualities that were meant specifically for us.  My mom would always say that “God doesn’t make mistakes”.  I think SHE had a valid point.  We all have characteristics that make us who we are.  It’s those little pieces of us that help “make the world go around”.

Have you ever found yourself apologizing for being too emotional?  Many of us lack the ability to be vulnerable and to allow our feelings to show.  It has taken many years to set this part of myself free and I have discovered that the individuals that I have allowed the privilege of experiencing my vulnerability may not be ready for the realness of SHE.  So I now surround myself with people that understand my heart and can appreciate the beauty of acknowledging my feelings and the strength it takes to allow my emotions to show.

I am naturally a lover and a nurturer.  Every time my heart was broken or someone disappointed me, I would fall back on the notion that I love too hard and open my heart too easily.  But what if I hadn’t chosen to love at all, then I would not have had the opportunity to experience the season that was placed before me to live and learn life’s valuable lessons.  A really close friend of mine that shares a similar spirit pointed out to me that I was born to do exactly what I do and made to be exactly who I am.  If it’s natural for me, then I need to go with it.  It may bring pain at times, but that’s life.  If I fight it, then SHE will miss her calling and most importantly her EVOLUTION.  Thank you Molly J!!

My greatest lesson is in letting go of  control and allowing others to be who they are meant to be in my life.  I can only “Love Myself First” by allowing the gifts of everyone around me in.  Just as I am a lover, a helper and a beacon of emotions; there are people in my life with qualities that make my “world go around”.  This may be the most uncomfortable lesson for me to learn, but just as we were born to give ourselves the proper love and attention it deserves, we were also made to receive it.  It may come in many forms, but it is the gift of life that I believe I robbed myself of the most.  It is the final piece of the puzzle that makes up The Evolution of SHE.

Loving Myself First……SHE

Patience

I was approaching the point where I’d resigned myself to a mediocre fate.  I, like many of you I’m sure, have a dead-end job, and the writer in me is bursting at the seams.  I want to be paid for my passion.  I want someone to acknowledge this wellspring of talent.  I was ready to trade in this dead-end job for another one, the only difference being better pay.

And then I read a detailed horoscope this weekend.  A little background: I’m a recovering astrology junkie.  I once lived my life by the stars, which, for me, was destructive, because I wasn’t taking responsibility for my actions.  I get some guidance from it now, but it doesn’t hold sway over my every move like it used to.

Back to my original point: the horoscope told me to hold off on trying to start a new job until July.  JULY?!! That’s a whopping three months away!  I’ll be a shriveled remnant of a writer by then, clutching what’s left of my long-forgotten talent.  It’s ironic because this was the same time frame that I gave myself back at the beginning of the year, but I abandoned it due to mounting frustrations with my current job.

But then I started to see the possibilities that three months can hold.  Whether it was correct .or not, the horoscope was a reminder that I needed to slow down.  In three months, I can get my portfolio together and transform it from mediocre to spectacular.  In three months, I can learn more about the software that every single job that I want seems to require. In three months, I can make new contacts who may introduce me to companies that I only dreamt of working for. In three months… I can make possibilities into realities and create new stars to reach for.

It was then that I realized, this is my time (dammit!). So what if I have to be patient on the job front, I am still flowering as a writer, as a woman, as a human being. Exercising patience doesn’t mean that the record has stopped spinning; it’s just chopped and screwed. And now that everything is in slow motion, I can hear every word that the universe is whispering to me. I’m going to carpe every single diem in this three-month (or however long it may be) period. I have no idea what’s in store for me; I only know what I am capable of. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned for sure, it’s that when you do the right thing—when you act according to the rhythm of your spirit, the universe responds in kind.

Choose Love, Love You

Nina Brewton "Baldhead Queen"

Choose Love, Love You

I chose to love myself long before I learned how to.  I recall looking into my brown eyes years before I discovered the power they held, I knew that there was something special about me.  This knowing went beyond my father’s encouragement to be the best little sister, friend and student that I could be.  This was something internal.  Before my knowledge of God or any revelation of the words in the Bible…I knew it.  Something almost primitive drove me to believe that I was born with greatness within, with an unmatchable beauty that went beyond these eyes…

I loved myself long before the first boy ever told me he did…stumbling over his words trying to find just the right answer after I challenged his declaration to know, “Why?”  It took me years to find my own words and voice to describe how I felt about myself but in due time, I did, and learned to speak freely, telling myself the reasons why.

It’s so easy to tell ourselves (and others) all the many things we dislike about ourselves:  “I’m too short”, “Lord, these thighs…”, “I have no degree…” and the ever popular, “I’m too fat.”  Even when others try to love us genuinely, we too often shoot down compliments with disclaimers of why their words can’t possibly be true.

Their words are true, but you must first choose to love yourself whether those around you, or even you, know how to.  It’s okay that you are still learning how.  A musician’s love for a particular sound existed before she knew how to make the sound herself.

“I am intelligent…I am wise…My eyes and smile are bright and inviting…my heart is open…my thighs are sexy…my hair is mine…my skin wears scars as evidence of survival…I am peaceful…I am beautifully and wonderfully made…I am Queen and God be my King…He first loved me, why shouldn’t I love myself?”

Today and every day, learn to love you first.  Literally take the time to look yourself in the eyes EVERY morning and say, out loud, at least three things you love about you.  I challenge you to stand naked in a full length mirror and adore every party of your body.  Saturate yourself with positivity, beginning with the words you speak and love you give…to you.

Love Yourself First – Day 1

Today was my awakening.  SHE could barely catch her breath trying to build a dream for someone else.  It was in that moment that SHE remembered to love herself first.  In a world where SHE would hope that love and positive intentions would drive the actions of others, SHE had to realize that love and commitment looks different, feels different and is manifested differently for everyone.

SHE tends to be overly invested in the dreams of those that she loves the most, and they seem to be only invested in their own.  BUT at the end of the day they are simply loving themselves first.  SHE envies them and wishes that it was easy to disconnect from it all and to take the time to cater to her needs first.  It’s a conscious choice that will create peace, balance and healthy relationships independent of expectations.

SHE is constantly in search of love that is unconditional and can withstand the test of time.  Hoping that a love exists that is created from a bond that is unbreakable and a perception that can’t be tainted.  A love SHE can depend on and committed to being her partner in life.  Only to realize that the love she is looking for is within …. self-love.  Can you relate?  Take the challenge to love yourself first.

30 Days of Loving Yourself First

SHE is devoted to her daughter, her work, her clients, her lover, family and friends.  SHE thrives on passion and purpose and is inspired by the success and excitement of others.  But as my life has become full of so many beautiful people and things, many times SHE will forget about herself.  I am sure many can relate to the life of “people to see and things to do”.  It sometimes becomes a race and in order to win the race daily; care, love and appreciation for self is the first thing we seem to reprioritize.

I know my limit, which is why I needed to take some SHE time to connect with myself and refocus on what is the guide to my existence, which is my heart, only to come to the realization that SHE must love herself first.  I am passionate about people, connections, relationships and seeing others succeed.  I am motivated by my determination to create a beautiful life for my daughter filled with experiences that will hopefully support her in creating a broad perception of herself and her world.  BIG dreams and personal expectations of overachievement and service to others never fail to lead to burnout because SHE forgot about herself at the end of the day.

My daughter is my life and when I discount myself, I am teaching her to do the same.  When I fail to take the time to breath, her perception will mirror my life.  This is a journey that many of us choose to take, and wonder why we end up at our breaking points.  In order to create strong children and families and to build a healthy society as a whole, we have to learn to love ourselves first.  This is the key to the balance that drives our commitment to individual spirituality, our path of prosperity, self-worth and total well-being.  Our commitment to ourselves has us connected to our individual paths and living the lives of our dreams and not the desires of everyone else.  It is what gives us peace and creates positive relationships, connections and communication with others.

We are all moved and inspired by various things, but my source of connection with myself was in a drive through an unfamiliar countryside, leaving me with nothing but my thoughts and wonder of what would appear around each corner.  It was through a trip to the beach to see an endless sea of blue and to hear nothing but the waves.  It was topped with a reconnection to my love for my body and the strength and endurance that I forget SHE had through a long run over the bridges and along the riverside.  Those were the moments that brought me back to home and to recharge my love, appreciation and necessity for constant self-care because SHE is worth it.  To be a light, to be successful and to be the person you are meant to be does not require that you forget about taking care of yourself.  30 days of loving yourself first is all it will take.  SHE guarantees that you will create even greater results in your life and the things and people that matter most.  Take the challenge.

SHE-Ros

As we are wrapping up Black History Month and approaching Women’s History Month, I wanted to take the opportunity to honor some of our leaders that have helped create opportunities for African Americans that once seemed impossible.  As I sit here with my own thoughts about my life, my past and current struggles and reason for existence, I thought it would be even more appropriate to integrate the two and to honor African American Women; the power, strength and foundation for families, individuals, companies and even the President of the United States.

SHE is your mother, sister, wife, friend, self-sacrificing nurturer, bearer of life in many forms.  SHE is a woman.  African American women have historically taken on roles that have created many of the positive aspects of our culture today.  They have been the source of love, faith and hope, when life outside the walls of our homes seemed hopeless.  They have been the source of strength behind our men as they worked and labored to provide, when just “getting by” seemed impossible.  My mother was the one that postponed her schooling and career to care for and nurture her children and then did both so that we could see an example of perseverance, determination and possibilities.

In our community I am always in awe and appreciation when I hear the stories of grandmothers and aunties that have taken children into their homes and raised them as their own.  African American women have traditionally been that village that raised the children, not just the ones that came from their wombs.  SHE is a source of light and inspiration.  SHE is the water, air and nourishment for the garden.  And it is because of who SHE has been and IS that makes her beautiful and worthy to be honored.

I will always reflect on the path of freedom created by Harriet Tubman, the demands made by Rosa Parks, the words written by Maya Angelou and the empire built by Oprah, but it is the common African America woman that continues to be extraordinary in my eyes.  In spite of the tainted images and perceptions that are being created of African American women currently, SHE hopes that we don’t forget where we came from and how we can continue to evolve into the Epitome of an African American Woman to honor those before us.
